So I replaced my caliper today and after I put the tire back on, I seem to have lost the wheel lock key. Well I am going to look for it again but I am fed up with those stupid wheel locks anyways. I plan to force them off and put normal lug nuts on instead. Any tips on getting wheel locks off without the key? I already know that I just need a slightly smaller socket, hammer it on and then take off the wheel lock. Anybody have further suggestions?

That is the only way that all of the techs at both of the dealerships that I work for do it.

Wheel lock removal kit - rent it from the auto parts store.

I've done it with a chisel and mallet on one that stuck out far enough. Just jam it in and hammer till it breaks. Saves ruining a socket.

They just give those out? I imagine people could find nefarious uses for that.

You can buy bolt-cutters at the hardware store - it doesn't mean you're automatically going to be using them to break into storage facilities.

Drill out the center a little and then use an easy out. And hope they weren't banged on there with an impact gun.

got them off today with just a 17mm socket. Didn't even need to hammer it on! What crappy wheel locks!!

Didn't have to hammer it at all so thankfully no ruined sockets. Lugs were stuck in the socket each time but a brief hammering freed them easily. Found my original non-locking Lugs and put those on instead. Never using wheel locks again!

Ha! That's awful. You'd hope it would at least be a little bit difficult. Back when I worked for AAA, people were always happy with how quickly I could break into their cars when they locked them out of it, until they realized how easy it is for somebody to break into their car, haha.

That's why I never lock my car. If someone really wants to get in, have at it. It's usually a little more difficult to steal the whole car. Plus I've got the best theft deterrent, manual!
